Queen Kerry Washington’s beauty regimen revealed!

Hello Glamazonians! Queen Kerry Washington sat down with InStyle Magazine UK to spill some tea about her beauty regimen so of course you know I was paying full attention. Read on to find out more about the Scandal starlet’s make-up and hair do’s & don’ts. By the way, Kerry’s deep conditioning tip is a must for every natural afro girl!

Kerry-Washington1) Be bold

“I used to really stay away from a bold lip as I’d mostly focus on my eyes but now I play around a lot more with colour when I comes to my lips. It was actually thanks to a good friend of mine who’s a make-up artist and once I actually let her try it out on me I really loved that sense of play a bright lip can give. It’s something I’ve always had in my fashion choices but I’d never really thought of make-up as an accessory before.
It’s funny, but I think another reason I was more willing to take a risk is because it’s so important for me to go out into the world as myself rather than the characters I play so I always try and look as different from Olivia Pope as possible. Olivia always wears a more conservative natural look with a nude lip so I definitely think that may have been what left me open to trying something more fun.”

2) TLC your tresses

“Deep conditioning is something I’ve really learnt to embrace especially because I use so many products and heated tools on my hair during the week. When I’m not working I prefer to let my hair be natural– I’ll stick a good leave-in conditioner on and just pull it back or let it do its thing – basically the opposite of what Olivia does with her hair. At the beginning of this last season we actually did show Olivia with her hair in a natural texture – it started out with her and Jake on an island so we thought it would be really fun to show a side of her that we’d never seen before. It’s definitely not who she is back home though – her hair is kind of like her armor – it’s part of how she defines herself and how she presents herself to the world.

3) Get to know your skin

“I feel sort of blessed and cursed that I had eczema as a small child as it meant that I’ve always had a relationship with a dermatologist whilst there are a lot of women out there who are walking into a derm’s office for the first time in their 30s. There’s so much conflicting advice out there and so many products claiming different things that it’s difficult to work out what really works for your skin. It’s actually part of the reason I now work with Neutrogena as I like the fact that they’re rooted in science and they try to help women be the best version of themselves rather than hiding behind smoke and mirrors. At the end of the day I’m also just a girl who loves good products.”

4) Be militant about cleansing

“My biggest beauty bug-bear is that I wear that make-up between 16 and 17 hours a day under baking hot lights when I’m working so I’m almost religious about taking my make-up off. I never sleep in it  (well, sometimes I might leave on a little eye make up just for fun as it looks so much better the next day)  but I always try to let my skin breathe overnight, even if I just use make-up remover wipes to take everything off – it’s so, so important.”

5) Fake it

“I wore acrylic nails for a long time and found that they weren’t the healthiest thing for my nails. I do love a gel but because I have to have such a specific look now for the show (clean, bare nails) when it comes to red carpet events I’ve been doing those press-on nails instead.  I’ll paint them a colour that I love then kind of shape them to my hand – it just means that I can have a bit more fun with my nails again.”

-KERRY WASHINGTON-6) Bespoke your base

“When it comes to foundation, I think it’s important to have at least a couple of shades in your make-up bag because different parts of your face are different colours and I  know that I can look very different depending on the time of year – just make sure you blend them together well. Also, don’t be afraid to change-up the texture of your foundation to suit you – just mix some with little bit of moisturizer to create your own tinted moisturizer based on colours that really work for you.”

7) Make exercise work for you

“I would say I’m pretty healthy but it’s also because I have to be. Right before we started shooting the show I was at an event with Ellen Pompeo and I was grilling her for tips on how to handle this crazy TV world as I’d never worked in television in this way before. She told me to treat yourself like an athlete i.e. make sure that you eat well and sleep well and exercise so that your body’s capable of meeting the rigors  of the job and that’s proven to be the best advice for me. I also try to pray and meditate in the mornings because I find that when I do, it gives me a little bit of time to get centered and creates more room in my heart and mind to actually do all those things like eat and exercise right.”

MAC X GIAMBATTISTA VALLI LIPSTICK COLLECTION

Hello Glamazonians! If you’re a make-up hoarder like me, you’ve most likely heard of the Mac- Giambattista Valli collaboration. I’ve had my eye on these shades for a while so color me excited when I saw that one of my fave beauty sites, Temptalia did their swatch and reviews for them. The colours are Bianca B, Margherita, Tats, Charlotte, Eugenie. Bianca B is a very pale pink non wearable shade that doesn’t tickle my fancy. On my very brown skin, it’ll look wayyyy too harsh. The more I stare at Margherita, the more I’m convincing myself to get it. My faves are Tats, Charlotte, and Eugenie. How beautiful are they?!?! And the packaging alone makes me want them even more. Now I just need to set an alarm for July 9th before they’re all gone from the MAC website.

GLAMAZONIAN QUOTE OF THE WEEK!!!

Hello Glamazonians! Ever since Lady Lupita Nyong’o spoke oh-so-eloquently at Essence Magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon almost two months ago, I haven’t been able to get her words out of my head. I couldn’t figure out which part of her speech to post for Glamazonian Quote of the Week, so I decided to post the entire the video. So clearly my lovefest for for the woman isn’t ending anytime soon!

GLAMAZONIAN RED CARPET REPORT: 2014 ACADEMY AWARDS!!!

Hello Glamazonians! I posted this a couple of days ago but without any text and I’m sure my loyal glamazonians wondered why, since I always have something to say, about well…everything. I had typed up a response to the red carpet, the award show and all its shenanigans, but then realised that I was rambling and decided against posting it. Let’s have another go at this, shall we? First and foremost, Lady Lupita Nyong’o(thou shalt always refer to such beauty with lady in the beginning) let me say on behalf of well most Africans outside of the diaspora, we are indeed proud of you. You are the epitome of grace, style and class and I am lucky to call you a role model. The custom Prada gown you wore to the award show made gasp so loudly my mum thought there was something wrong with me. And when Christoph Waltz uttered the words “and the Oscar goes to… Lupita Nyong’o” I think I fainted right then and there. I kept rewinding the telly so much, I thought the DVR was going to break. I’ll stop my lovefest on Lupita temporarily, of course, to fill and start our red carpet report. Camila Alves looked ravishing in a pink Gabriela Cadena while South African goddess, Charlize Theron,  looked beautiful in her usual Dior label.

MAKE-UP PRODUCTS I LOVED THIS SEASON: SUMMER 2013 EDITION!!!

Hello Glamazonians! Okay, so officially summer ends on September 21st, but since fall semester is right around the corner, I figured why not compile a list of the go to makeup products I used this season.

1. READY TO WEAR NEW YORK COUTURE BLUSH DUO– Not sure how much it cost since it was a present from a friend. The colours in the HSN brand’s kit are Pink Platform and Almond Lace-ups although I tend to reach for Almond Lace-ups more often. It’s an amazing contour colour.

2. URBAN DECAY‘s DELUXE EYESHADOW BOX $38- I surprisingly got a lot of use out of this palette this season. The packaging alone is to die for, but the colours don’t disappoint either. Anyone who’s familiar with UD, knows how pigmented their shades are and their primer potion underneath the shadow is gorg! P.S my fave shades are Peace, Zero and Shag. My camera isn’t doing them justice enough!

3. URBAN DECAY PRIMER POTION $20- I normally opt for eyeliner pencils as eyeshadow bases(ONLY CREAMY ONES) but I decided to try the primer potion and I love it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still use my pencils every now and then but at the moment I’m loving the primer potion.

4. LA GIRL PRO CONCEALER $3- I kid you not, this concealer is the business! As much as I love MAC’s Studio Finish and Bobbi Brown Corrector, LA Girl has a special place in my heart mainly because of the price. Just kidding, the affordability aside, the product is amazing. The consistency isn’t too watery, which is perfect. You can buy two different shades to mix but I found my perfect shade which is Medium Bisque!

5. NYX SHOCKING PINK ROSE INTENSE LIPSTICK $6- I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this lipstick! On National Lipstick Day, I amassed a list of my fave lipsticks and this was on top of the list! There’s nothing better than wearing a soft eye look alongside this devastatingly bright shade.
Whitney Reindorf-Malm

6. NEW YORK COLOR BIG BOLD PLUMPING MAGNIFIED MAUVE LIPGLOSS $4- This shade is my go-to when I have on a dark-smokey eyeshadow.

HAPPY NATIONAL LIPSTICK DAY!!!

Hello Glamazonians! Long time, no post:( Well I’m back and hopefully with more frequent posts. Anyway, Happy National Lipstick Day! Who would have thought there would be a day dedicated to lipsticks! In honor of this random but totally magnificent day, I am counting down some of my fave lipstick shades!

5. REVLON‘s SUPER LUSTROUS KISS ME CORAL– During autumn season, this is my go-to lipstick! Women with yellow undertones should gravitate toward this shade as it brings out the warmth in your complexion.

Revlon Super Lustrous - Creme Lipstick, Kiss Me Coral - .15 oz

4. MAYBELLINE‘s COLOR SENSATIONAL CRAZY FOR COFFEE– At first glance I thought, why on earth am I considering brown lipstick, when I have brown skin? But after I read this post on Real Beauty‘s website, I had to try it. The lipstick has red undertones and works for any skin tones!

Maybelline ColorSensational Lipcolor, Crazy for Coffee 275 - .15 oz

3. BH COSMETICSCREME LUXE MOODY MERLOT– I saw this lipstick on BH Cosmetics’ website and couldn’t pass it up. The creamy wine shade is perfect for vamping up your look.

2. REVLON‘s SUPER LUSTROUS CERTAINLY RED– This absolutely beautiful shade is perfect for most skin tones. During cold winter months, it’s my go-to shade because of its creamy finish. It has a blue undertone so women of fair skin tones have to be careful with this shade because it could look rather harsh. Olive, bronze, or deep skin tones can give shades like this a try.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick Certainly Red 740

1. MY fave lipstick … at the moment, is NYX SHOCKING PINK ROSE INTENSE. The moment I saw a picture of Queen Kerry Washington at the Scandal wrap party in that bright pink lipstick, I knew I had to add it to my wish list! Then Karolina Kurkova wore an even brighter fuchsia shade and I knew I had to have it. I was a bit nervous about the color and consistency but it worked out better than expected. It goes on really smoothly and lasts really long. I didn’t even need to outline my lips with lip liner.

KERRY WASHINGTON’S INSANELY FIERCE VANITY FAIR COVER!!!

Hello Glamazonians! Sorry I’ve been M.I.A these past few days, blame the summer classes I’m taking. I checked my email yesterday and a lovely reader said to me, “I’m surprised you haven’t blogged about Kerry Washington‘s Vanity Fair cover photos yet, knowing how much you love to blog about her. I know you’ll have a ton to say, so I’m waiting patiently.” Trust me love, the minute I saw those photos I momentarily lost my mind. Not only because of KW’s stunning cover photo, but because I found out that Vanity Fair hasn’t had a black woman on the cover in SIX YEARS! Seriously, I don’t make this stuff up! Not even typical magazine cover staples like  Beyoncé, Rihanna and Halle Berry. The print industry has this stigma, this mentality, that having black women on the cover of magazines can’t and won’t sell as many issues as having women of other races. Back to Queen Kerry. After her amazingly fierce ELLE Magazine photos, and now Vanity Fair, I expect Marie Claire, Rolling Stone and of course the fashion bible, Vogue, to be knocking on her door. Make it happen Anna Wintour, we know you love Scandal too. It’s about time that more people are taking note of her powerhouse talent. College graduate(George Washington University), political and social advocate and a great role model to boot, this woman is here to stay, Hollywood, now grant her the cover of VOGUE!

TAYLOR MADE MANICURE MONDAYS!!!

Hello Glamazonians! My friend Taylor Reis and I got together and brainstormed an idea for Fiercely Glamazonian. Since Tay has an affinity for nail art, we came up with a “Taylor Made Manicure Mondays” segment. Every couple of weeks, I shall update this segment with new tutorials.

STEP ONE: Gather supplies listed below.

  • Nail polish remover
  • Nail buffer
  • cotton buds
  • tooth picks
  • Nail polish
  • Base Coat
  • Top Coat

supplies

PRE-REQUISITE BEFORE BEGINNING: Make sure nails are cleaned thoroughly. Clip and buff nails before starting step two!

STEP TWO: Paint nails with white nail polish. The first coat doesn’t have to be perfect since you’ll be going over it again.
step 1

NO PICTURE AFTER STEP TWO, SORRY GLAMS!

STEP THREE: Paint yellow polish over white. Make sure there is a little bit room left on the bottom of the nail.
step 2

STEP FOUR: Add one more coat to the yellow polish. Don’t worry if it’s a little messy. You can clean it up after.
white & yellow polish

STEP FIVE: Take the nail art colours and paint whatever design you want. Taylor wanted to do Aztec like designs on my nails but you can do whatever designs you want. Make sure the design is only on the yellow polish. You can leave it as is, and apply your top coat. But if you’re a bit adventurous with your nails, keep reading.

STEP SIX: Try different designs on each finger nail, add top coats and VIOLÀ ALL DONE!
Finished product!

KAROLINA KURKOVA @ HOPE FOR CHILDREN GALA!!!

Hello Glamazonians! Gorgeous Swedish supermodel, Karolina Kurkova wore a demure but sexy body-hugging dress to the Samsung Hope for Children Gala. But it’s not the outfit I’m gawking at. It’s that beautifully vibrant pink lipstick! After seeing her pictures, I went on the hunt for the perfect pink shade. As you all know, I’m a sucker for bright red lipstick but lately I’ve been loving pink.

Shades similar to Karolina’s are:
