Queen Kerry Washington’s beauty regimen revealed!

Hello Glamazonians! Queen Kerry Washington sat down with InStyle Magazine UK to spill some tea about her beauty regimen so of course you know I was paying full attention. Read on to find out more about the Scandal starlet’s make-up and hair do’s & don’ts. By the way, Kerry’s deep conditioning tip is a must for every natural afro girl!

Kerry-Washington1) Be bold

“I used to really stay away from a bold lip as I’d mostly focus on my eyes but now I play around a lot more with colour when I comes to my lips. It was actually thanks to a good friend of mine who’s a make-up artist and once I actually let her try it out on me I really loved that sense of play a bright lip can give. It’s something I’ve always had in my fashion choices but I’d never really thought of make-up as an accessory before.
It’s funny, but I think another reason I was more willing to take a risk is because it’s so important for me to go out into the world as myself rather than the characters I play so I always try and look as different from Olivia Pope as possible. Olivia always wears a more conservative natural look with a nude lip so I definitely think that may have been what left me open to trying something more fun.”

2) TLC your tresses

“Deep conditioning is something I’ve really learnt to embrace especially because I use so many products and heated tools on my hair during the week. When I’m not working I prefer to let my hair be natural– I’ll stick a good leave-in conditioner on and just pull it back or let it do its thing – basically the opposite of what Olivia does with her hair. At the beginning of this last season we actually did show Olivia with her hair in a natural texture – it started out with her and Jake on an island so we thought it would be really fun to show a side of her that we’d never seen before. It’s definitely not who she is back home though – her hair is kind of like her armor – it’s part of how she defines herself and how she presents herself to the world.

3) Get to know your skin

“I feel sort of blessed and cursed that I had eczema as a small child as it meant that I’ve always had a relationship with a dermatologist whilst there are a lot of women out there who are walking into a derm’s office for the first time in their 30s. There’s so much conflicting advice out there and so many products claiming different things that it’s difficult to work out what really works for your skin. It’s actually part of the reason I now work with Neutrogena as I like the fact that they’re rooted in science and they try to help women be the best version of themselves rather than hiding behind smoke and mirrors. At the end of the day I’m also just a girl who loves good products.”

4) Be militant about cleansing

“My biggest beauty bug-bear is that I wear that make-up between 16 and 17 hours a day under baking hot lights when I’m working so I’m almost religious about taking my make-up off. I never sleep in it  (well, sometimes I might leave on a little eye make up just for fun as it looks so much better the next day)  but I always try to let my skin breathe overnight, even if I just use make-up remover wipes to take everything off – it’s so, so important.”

5) Fake it

“I wore acrylic nails for a long time and found that they weren’t the healthiest thing for my nails. I do love a gel but because I have to have such a specific look now for the show (clean, bare nails) when it comes to red carpet events I’ve been doing those press-on nails instead.  I’ll paint them a colour that I love then kind of shape them to my hand – it just means that I can have a bit more fun with my nails again.”

-KERRY WASHINGTON-6) Bespoke your base

“When it comes to foundation, I think it’s important to have at least a couple of shades in your make-up bag because different parts of your face are different colours and I  know that I can look very different depending on the time of year – just make sure you blend them together well. Also, don’t be afraid to change-up the texture of your foundation to suit you – just mix some with little bit of moisturizer to create your own tinted moisturizer based on colours that really work for you.”

7) Make exercise work for you

“I would say I’m pretty healthy but it’s also because I have to be. Right before we started shooting the show I was at an event with Ellen Pompeo and I was grilling her for tips on how to handle this crazy TV world as I’d never worked in television in this way before. She told me to treat yourself like an athlete i.e. make sure that you eat well and sleep well and exercise so that your body’s capable of meeting the rigors  of the job and that’s proven to be the best advice for me. I also try to pray and meditate in the mornings because I find that when I do, it gives me a little bit of time to get centered and creates more room in my heart and mind to actually do all those things like eat and exercise right.”

Hello Glamazonians! It’s been exactly a year since I posted my ‘model of the month’ so I decided to resurrect it from the drafts section. This month’s model of the month is none other than the fiercest woman I know, Inca Nolani. Did I mention she is also my partner-in-crime/sister-friend? While Inca is slaying photo-shoots left and right, she is also booking advertisements and appearing on Uncover Papua, a docu-series in Indonesia. Well my sister-friend decided to send me shots from her recent shoot for Swimwear by Musim and well I’ll let you  be the judge of them.

Why we’re all still obsessed with Misty Copeland

Hello Glamazonians!

Ever since Misty Copeland landed the coveted spot of Principal Dancer, it seems more people are enamored of her. As someone who has been following Copeland’s career for the past few years, I can tell you that she is so worth the attention we’re giving her. Being given the spot of principal dancer means that she is the highest rank of the dancers at American Ballet Theatre! Copeland is the also first Black woman to ever hold that title in ABT’s 75 year history. Isn’t it interesting that in 2015 we’re still talking about people of colour making new strides in their professions? I have friends who say to me, “why can’t we just celebrate her accomplishment, must it be about race all the time”? I say to them the same thing I say to everyone who asks that question. When we get to a place where being the first person of colour in a position isn’t such a monumental achievement, then our work is done. Until then, we celebrate Misty for her hard work and celebrate the strides she’s making for young girls in the Ballet world.

Hello Glamazonians! I’m back from hiding. Temporarily of course. You’re probably wondering why I chose this time to gossip with all you glams, well it’s hell week. What’s hell week, you wonder? It’s exam week, here at uni, and since everyone is literally going mad with studying I decided to take a little break from drowning in Accounting and Biology and entertain myself with the annual lingerie show. The models looked absolutely beautiful with no flaw in sight. From Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss‘ strut down the catwalk, to Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio‘s showing of the $2million bras, there was no shortage of entertainment at this year’s show. Oh and Ed Sheeran and Hozier performed also but I have a feeling you all weren’t really paying much attention to them although mum absolutely LOVED Ed’s performance alongside telling me how small models have gotten nowadays. LOL.

P.S Don’t you guys just love Taylor & Karlie’s ensembles?

Hello Glamazonians! Ever since Lady Lupita Nyong’o spoke oh-so-eloquently at Essence Magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon almost two months ago, I haven’t been able to get her words out of my head. I couldn’t figure out which part of her speech to post for Glamazonian Quote of the Week, so I decided to post the entire the video. So clearly my lovefest for for the woman isn’t ending anytime soon!

Hello Glamazonians! With the world of fashion taking a much needed break from the non stop stressball that is fashion week, I am here to share with you glams some of my favourite fall collections. I don’t know what I loved more about the Miu Miu Paris Fashion Week show, Lady Lupita Nyong’o‘s appearance or Miuccia Prada‘s designs. Let’s begin with the gorgeous ladies seated in the front row, shall we? I did not get a chance to rant about my dislike for Margot Robbie‘s new hair colour(peep the last pic w/ Lupita.) Ay Dios mio Margot, I was rooting for you to take Hollywood by storm with your talent, beauty and savvy fashion sense. But what do you do, you dye your hair brown and become unrecognizable on the Oscar’s red carpet. Dye it blonde again please, so I can go back to fawning over you and everything you wear.

Hello Glamazonians! Happy New Year! Did you make New Year’s resolutions? Mine was, update this blog more, of course and regularly check my email(horrid habit of not checking!)  Hollywood’s elite gave us a fashion palette cleanser for what’s to come this award season and I for one cannot wait. One of my fave new ‘It Girls’, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, has been a breath of fresh air giving fashion lovers something to look forward to this season. She attended the Palm Springs Film Festival in a sleeveless coral Elie Saab Couture knee-length dress with gold embellishments. Other celebs on the carpet were Sandra Bullock in a colour-blocked Alex Perry number, Camilla Alves in a Mikael D gown, Amy Adams in a Juan Carlos Obando gown and Naomie Harris in Naeem Khan.

P.S Did you glams peep Idris Elba‘s tweet before the show, about the bowtie? *blushing-oh-so-profusely* Confused? Head over to his twitter account!

Hello Glamazonians! I hope you all have been enjoying your holidays. Well put down the food and join me in counting down some of my fave red carpet celeb starlets.

12. LILY COLLINS in a Cushnie et Ochs Resort 2014 knee- length ivory fishnet stamped leather dress with cut-out accents ROSE BYRNE in a gorgeous, rose toned Calvin Klein gown at the 2013 Emmy Awards. The moment I saw this look, my mind immediately went back to Emma Stone’s 2011 Golden Globe look.

Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein Collection

11. ZOE SALDANA in Vionnet at the UK premeire of her film, Star Trek into the Darkness. The reason I love this look is because of the way Zoe carries the dress. The gown on it’s own is a bit drab, but Ms Saldana’s hair and make-up and the way the wind is blowing the bottom half of the dress is giving me all the life I need! The longer I look at this dress the more I like it.

10. Unlike Zoe Saldana’s gown pictured above, RIHANNA‘s Azzedine Alaia gown was equally as stunning captured in motion as well as stills. And you all know how much I love my red lipstick. Only Rihanna could make something so simple seem effortless and chic at the same time!

9. Downtown Abby‘s MICHELLE DOCKERY was one of the trendsetters of the award season with this fabulous white and gold Alexandre Vaulthier gown.

8. HOLLAND RODEN had quite a few fashion moments this year so I knew the newbie deserved a spot on this list. I was conflicted with picking either the Naeem Khan concoction she donned to the MTV VMA‘s or the absolutely gorgeous Donna Karan  over-the-knee length dress.

7. NICOLE RICHIE looked like a bronze statue in this floor length Marc Jacobs gown. A much as I prefer dramatic, over the top hair and makeup looks, I appreciated the clean makeup and slick back hair.

6. SELENA GOMEZ‘s Atelier Versace look was utter perfection at the MTV VMA’s.

5. Prabal Gurung has been having a great year, from sold out collections at Target to Hollywood elites sporting his gowns. One of my fave designs of his was worn by none other than DIANE KRUGER.

4. JESSICA CHASTAIN was a vision in this curve hugging Armani Prive gown accentuated her body in all the right places. Diamond jewellery,  soft curls in her hair and a red lipstick to boot, this ensemble completely stole the show at the Academy Awards.

3. The ever so mesmerising CHARLIZE THERON was a vision in white as she walked the red carpet in a peplum Dior gown.

2. QUEEN KERRY WASHINGTON looked absolutely ravishing in a gorgeous gown from the 2013 Giles Spring Collection. Bold wine coloured lipstick and minimal accessories drove this look home for me.

1. QUEEN KERRY WASHINGTON wore this breathtakingly gorgeous Vera Wang gown to the MET GALA earlier this year. This look was by far my favourite look this year.

Hello Glamazonians! Finally the semester is over, so you know what that means right; more updates! The 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired early last week and it wasn’t short of spectacular. I couldn’t update then because it was exam week and ms Whitney had to get it together;) Okay, back to business. Taylor Swift performed at the 2013 VSFS in two ensembles; a head to toe union jack get-up and a gorgeous jeweled mini dress with sleek straight hair and a smokey eye. I think she gave some of those supermodels a run for their money, right? You be the judge of that.
